CHEESE (Cheers with English) is a community development-based activity held by SCOPE CIMSA FK UIN SH. CHEESE was intended to increase the knowledge of English for the middle school students of Madrasah Pembangunan Jakarta. CHEESE was actually started in the form of English-teaching for children. But we realized that it was not as impactful as we wanted it to be so we changed it into community development. We discovered that the middle school level is the right population for the interventions. We talked to Madrasah Pembangunan Jakarta and they happily let us taught their students. After we discussed about the intervention with their English teacher, we agreed that we would hold five interventions, each intervention held every Monday on 4 pm. We also agreed the materials needed to be taught to the students are based on what they were going to be taught by their English teacher.
First intervention was about the dates and years. On the first intervention, we taught the students about ordinal numbers and how to spell and pronounce them. We also integrated the lesson about ordinal number to dates. We taught them on how the spelling and pronounciation of the dates was and they actually didn’t find it difficult as they followed the lesson easily.
Second intervention was about the review of the first intervention. We did a review because most of them wanted to understand more about the dates and years and how to spell and pronounce them. Third intervention was about the animals. On this intervention, we held a game to guess the name of the animal shown on the pictures above their heads and after the name of the animal was guessed, they were asked to pronounce and spell them with our guidances. We also gave the students some snacks to increase their motivation to follow the game.
For the forth and fifth intervention, the intervention was about public places. On this intervention, we also held a game to bring out their motivation and curiosity about public places. We also taught them about the things related to the places. We keep taught them about the pronounciation and the spelling over and over again to ensure they understood the materials and to make them easier when they learn about the materials on the school. We hope that this community development activity could help them on understanding English easier and improve their grades.
