In the era of globalization and MEA (Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN), it is now increasingly easier for foreigners to come and work in Indonesia. Thus, Indonesians must strengthen their soft and hard skills in order to compete with foreigners. SCOPE CIMSA UNEJ has conducted an initial assessment by interviewing three teachers of SD Karangrejo V and we found that there was no English language subject in SD Karangrejo V.
Knowing this, SCOPE CIMSA UNEJ held an activity at the 23rd of March 2019 and 14th of September named SCOTENG (SCOPE Teach English) which aims to provide knowledge about basic English and increase the competitiveness of 5th and 6th graders of SDN Karangrejo V. SCOPE CIMSA UNEJ used posters, songs, as well as interactive images as media to teach and train the children to speak English with their friends and teachers. Before conducting the activity, we created modules containing some basic English like “Introductions”, “Body Parts”, and “Things in My Classroom”.
SCOTENG’s first meeting was to introduce the children on the basic concept of the English language like Introduction. In this first meeting, our SCOPE members taught the children how to introduce themselves in English. Initially, there were only 2 students who were able to introduce themselves, but at the end of our activity, most students could introduce themselves in English. After our teaching session, we also asked the kids to play a song game with us for them to memorise some English words. We sang the ABC Alphabet Song together whilst the students sequentially mentioned the alphabets. We did it with a bit of twist where the speaker would stop the song and the students who were last mentioning the alphabets had to introduce themselves in English in front of the class. Moreover, we also gave some gifts to the students as an appreciation for their courage to come in front of the class.
The next material was “Parts of Body” wherein these material SCOPE members mentioned some parts of the body by showing them where it is located. Then, we played a game called “Simon Says”, where the speaker mentioned parts that should be touched by the students while the speaker touched the other parts of the body. The students who touched the wrong parts had to come forward to show where the aforementioned body parts are.
The last material we did was “Things in My Classroom”, where SCOPE members taught the children about the English word of stuff that can be found in their classroom. After this, we continued this activity outside of the classroom, to play a little game to get the kids excited. Here, they have to look for the body parts of “Nobita” that had been spread in the hallway. The students were divided into four groups, where each of the group must complete Nobita’s body parts along with the names of it in English. Through this activity, we hoped that the students of SD Karangrejo V learn some basic English skills that would help them in the near future. We hoped that they could apply this knowledge in their daily lives. Thank you, CIMSA!
